"Myths and Legends"

In 2013, Stevenage Symphony Orchestra were delighted to be awarded a grant through the BBC Performing Arts Fund's "Community Music" scheme.  Competition for the grants was strong and central to the Orchestra’s success was their ability to demonstrate benefits to the community through the creation of new music

The grant enabled a new work to be commissioned from local composer Alison Wrenn, comprising a suite in five movements, entitled "Legends of the Tor".  This was inspired by some of the many myths and legends about Glastonbury Tor.

The project also took the orchestra into 3 local primary schools for a series of workshops given by orchestra members, in conjunction with The Music Workshop Company.  The children were then involved in the concert, which took place on the opening night of the Stevenage Arts Festival in June 2013.

The concert programme  also included popular classics on the myths and legends theme, including Saint-Saëns' famous "Danse Macabre" performed by international violin soloist Simon Hewitt Jones.

A CD of the concert is available from the orchestra, and the "Legends of the Tor" orchestral parts are also available for hire.
